A Project Creation Walkthrough
1. Welcome Screen
The welcome screen gives you an overview of the translation process:
- Upload your files: You can upload up to 20 files with a maximum of 100MB per file.
- Choose translation settings: Pick your translation flow, target languages, and any additional instructions.
- Send to translation: Review your project details, set a name, and submit for translation.
Click on "Let's get started" to begin creating your new translation project.
2. Add Content
On this screen, you’ll add the source content you want translated. You have two options for uploading content:
- Upload Files: Select and upload files directly from your device. Unbabel supports 30+ file formats including XLXS, DOCX, PPTX, and more.
- Paste Text: Copy and paste text directly into the provided field for quick translation of smaller text snippets.
An important tip: all uploaded files should have the same source language to ensure translation consistency.
After uploading your content, click "Next" to proceed.
3. Select Language and Choose Your Translation Flow
On this screen, you’ll be asked to select your target languages (the languages you want your source files translated into) and Translation Flow (the type of translation you’d like).
-
Select Language:
You’ll need to select two options from the dropdown menus:
- Source Language: Choose the source language of the files you uploaded.
- Target Languages: Select the target languages you need your content translated into. You can add multiple target languages as required.
-
Choose Your Translation Flow:
Choose from the Translation Flows available that best suits your project’s needs. Depending on your source language, some of the Translation Flows may not be available to you.
Select the appropriate translation type based on your needs:
- Basic: Machine-only translation, best for quick needs.
- Plus: Combines fast machine translation with human post-editing for better quality translation. The best all-round option.
- Pro: Human-reviewed translation, best for high-quality requirements.
- Premium: Double human-reviewed translation, for the highest level of accuracy.
Handling Unsupported Target Languages
If a selected target language is not supported by certain Translation Flows, you will be prompted to adjust your selections. Make sure that your selected source and/or target languages are compatible with your desired Translation Flow.
Splitting Orders for Human Translation
Pro tip: you may want to consider splitting your project’s in multiple orders to use different translation flows and include both human translation and review.
Select your preferred Translation Flow and click "Next" to proceed.
4. File Instructions
On this screen, you'll be asked to provide any instructions related to the files you uploaded for translation.
If you don't have any instructions to add, click “Skip” to be taken to the next screen.
An important note: these instructions relate only to the content of your translation (e.g. tone of voice, formal vs conversational etc) and are sent to the project’s individual language editors.
Please do not write anything project-related (e.g. deadlines, pricing etc). Reach out to experience@unbabel.com if you have anything that you would like to add project-related instructions.
You will be asked to add instructions either:
- For the selected file, available for selected editors,
- Languages specific instructions: instructions for specific target languages, which are visible only to that language’s editors.
Examples of Good vs. Bad Instructions
Provide clear, detailed instructions to ensure accurate translations. Good instructions are specific and context-rich, while bad instructions are vague and lack context.
- Good example: Please translate the technical terms using the glossary provided.
- Bad example: Please translate the document.
After adding instructions, click "Next" to continue.
5. Cost Estimation and Project Submission
On this screen, you’ll see a summary of your project and the cost estimation. Click on “Show more” to see all your project’s details and check them thoroughly before submitting your project.

Submitting the Project
- Once satisfied with the setup and cost, submit the project for translation.
